What Is the Best Roof Coating for Shingles? 4 'Best' Questions in Specialty Chemicals, Answered by Scenario

A chemical industry veteran answers four 'best' questions by scenario: the best roof coating for shingles, IFF biocides vs generic alternatives, choosing a hydrochloric acid product, and whether a pharma MBA is worth it.

When I first started handling specialty chemical and coatings orders in 2017, I assumed every “what’s the best” question had a single right answer. A customer would ask, “What is the best roof coating for shingles?” and I’d recommend the most expensive option in the catalog. Someone requested a hydrochloric acid product, and I’d quote the price list without asking what grade they actually needed. And whenever the pharma MBA came up, I’d say yes, because that’s what the industry articles said.

Eight years later, I can point to roughly $38,000 in wasted budget and a string of avoidable mistakes: a coating recommendation that peeled within ten months, a $2,150 overpayment for the wrong acid grade, and a Q1 2024 meeting that finally pushed me to build a pre-order checklist. The whole point of that checklist is to avoid the “best” trap, because in specialty chemicals — and in the career decisions around them — the universal answer doesn’t exist. The scenario decides.

So here are the four questions I get asked most, and the branching answers I’d give after watching myself and my colleagues get them wrong.

1. What is the best roof coating for shingles?

This question usually arrives from a homeowner with a leak, or a contractor looking for a product they can recommend with confidence. The internet is full of confident advice. Let me add a different perspective: the recommendation I made that failed.

In September 2022, I suggested a high-solids silicone roof coating for an older asphalt shingle roof. Why? Because silicone is marketed as the most durable coating available. That’s true — on the right substrate. It is not true on weathered asphalt shingles. Silicone handles ponding water beautifully on flat roofs, which is why you see it everywhere on commercial buildings. But it bonds poorly to worn asphalt. Ten months later, the customer sent me photographs of the coating peeling on the southwest-facing slope. The material alone cost $1,400, and it bought more embarrassment than protection.

So here’s the branching answer:

  • If your shingles are relatively new (roughly five years old or less), with intact granule coverage, and you want extra reflectivity and waterproofing: use a high-build acrylic roof coating with reflective pigments. Acrylics breathe, which matters more than people think — asphalt shingles need to release trapped vapor.
  • If your shingles are older, brittle, and losing granules, but the deck is still sound: apply a penetrating asphalt primer first, then an elastomeric acrylic topcoat. I can’t overstate this step. Without the primer, the topcoat soaks into the weathered asphalt unevenly and fails in patches.
  • If you’re dealing with a low-slope area or a section of flat roof: silicone or polyurethane is a legitimate choice — but that’s not a shingle problem, and it’s not the best roof coating for shingles. That’s the best coating for a different substrate.

So what is the best roof coating for shingles? For most homes, I’d argue it’s a high-quality acrylic or elastomeric coating designed for asphalt shingles, applied over a clean, primed surface. Not a miracle product, and not silicone. Period. It’s not an exciting answer, but the exciting one cost me a client relationship. I’ll take boring and bonded.

2. Which hydrochloric acid product do you actually need?

Hydrochloric acid (CAS 7647-01-0) is a workhorse chemical. It’s also where “higher quality” often turns into “more expensive than you need.”

In 2022, a client asked for a hydrochloric acid product for acid washing on a concrete plant line. The client told me to make sure it was good quality. I heard “best,” so I ordered reagent-grade acid — ACS spec, almost pure, and nearly three times the price of technical grade. It didn’t make the client’s process any better. It just made the invoice worse. The client needed a technical grade product all along.

The grade should branch by scenario:

  • For industrial cleaning, scale removal, pH neutralization, or concrete washing: technical grade hydrochloric acid at 30–34% is the practical choice. The trace impurities are irrelevant to the result. Paying for extra purity is waste — and if you’re a buyer, it’s a good way to embarrass yourself in front of your own procurement team.
  • For lab analysis, pharmaceutical intermediates, or food-process sanitation: reagent grade (ACS) or higher, with a Certificate of Analysis. In those applications, traceability is part of the specification. Impurities and missing paperwork are both compliance problems.
  • For drinking-water systems or NSF/ANSI-relevant applications: verify the product’s certification before you order. I’ve documented three rejections in the last two years from buyers who selected the right purity and the wrong compliance status. The paperwork gate is part of the product.

My rule is embarrassingly simple: I ask what the acid touches, what function it serves, and what documents the quality team expects. If the customer doesn’t know, we pause the order. That habit has saved well more than the $2,150 I wasted in 2022.

3. Are IFF biocides worth the premium over generic options?

Biocides are where the phrase “you get what you pay for” actually applies. But that phrase also needs a scenario check, which is more than I used to do.

I initially assumed that a name like IFF biocides was a luxury for companies with bigger budgets. Then a supplier’s cheaper biocide failed our customer’s export registration. The customer saved a few hundred dollars on the ingredient and then spent roughly six weeks and thousands of dollars trying to fix the compliance gap. In regulated products, the active substance is only half the package. The registration data is the other half.

When I look at IFF’s portfolio — from pharma solutions to industrial coatings ingredients — the reason to specify their biocides is not that the molecules are somehow magical. It’s that the documentation, dossiers, and registrations are maintained across jurisdictions. That convenience justifies the premium in specific scenarios.

  • If your formulation goes into regulated markets, or crosses borders — paints with in-can preservation, personal care, wood treatment, any claimed antimicrobial function: the brand is a proxy for the registry. Whether it’s IFF biocides or an established alternative, the deciding factor is the regulatory completeness, not the logo.
  • If you’re using a biocide in a captive industrial process, with no claimed function and no export paperwork: a generic alternative can be reasonable — provided the specification, stability, and supply chain fit. In that scenario, you’re buying molecules and a spec sheet, not a global dossier.

Granted, many generic biocide manufacturers run fully licensed facilities and maintain product registrations. The difference becomes visible when the number of target markets multiplies. I’d argue that’s the real reason procurement teams still write “IFF biocides” into their specs: not because the biochemistry is exotic, but because the file cabinet is full.

4. Is a pharma MBA worth it? (And when isn’t it?)

This one arrives in my inbox from pharma and specialty chemical professionals at least once a month. It behaves exactly like the other three questions: the answer splits according to the situation.

My original assumption was that a pharma MBA was the universal key to a management career. Then I watched a colleague with an MBA from a strong program stay at the same specialist title for four years, because the role didn’t need those skills. Meanwhile, a different colleague without an MBA — but with deep technical credibility and client trust — was promoted to lead a team of ten. The MBA amplifies your existing direction; it doesn’t turn you around.

  • If your goal is commercial leadership — strategic marketing, sales management, business development in pharma: a pharma MBA is worth it, especially if you’re building it on top of a life-science degree. The pair gives you legitimacy on both sides of the table.
  • If you’re in R&D, formulation, or technical services, and that’s where you’re strongest: don’t rush. A focused technical credential usually compounds faster. You can always add the MBA later, once your leadership scope actually requires formal business training.
  • If the driver is “I hate my current role and want out”: pause. An MBA is an investment, not an exit. Escaping a role you dislike with six figures of tuition and two years of lost income — in my opinion, that’s not a strategy, that’s a hope.

“What’s the best move in pharma?” is structurally the same question as the roof coating. It depends on the starting material and the intended function.

How to tell which scenario you’re in

If I could go back to 2017 and hand my younger self one tool, it would be this checklist. Four questions, in order.

  1. Name the substrate. New shingles or weathered shingles? Concrete line or lab glassware? In-can paint preservation or wastewater treatment? You can’t pick a solution until you’ve named the thing it must act on.
  2. Name the constraint. Registration, certification, export rules, the client’s approved supplier list. The constraint usually decides which branch you’re on.
  3. Estimate the cost of failure. A peeling coating on one roof is annoying and expensive. A rejected biocide shipment can mean a halted production line and a lost customer. The failure cost determines how much diligence is rational.
  4. State the goal, not just the deliverable. The deliverable is “a roof coating.” The goal is “no leaks for ten more years.”

The product that fits your scenario isn’t the one with the best marketing story. It’s the one that satisfies the constraints, with an acceptable failure cost, and actually reaches the goal. I’m not a roofing contractor, and I’m not a regulatory attorney. What I can tell you from the procurement side is this: most “best” dilemmas are really category errors. We asked for a universal answer and concluded there isn’t one.
