Somewhere on the internet right now, two people are arguing about ceramic coatings. One says it's the best money they've ever spent on a car. The other says it's snake oil in a fancy bottle.

They're probably both right.

Here's why: the term "ceramic coating" covers everything from a $30 "ceramic" spray wax to a $2,000+ multi-layer professional install with a warranty. And unless you read the spec sheet very carefully—like, actually read it instead of glancing at the marketing highlights—you really can't tell what you're buying.

I'm not a car detailer. I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at IFF, a specialty chemical and pharma solutions company. I review coatings, chemical ingredients, and delivery specs for a living. That's the whole problem in one sentence: the label doesn't tell you what's inside.

The Same Pattern, Bigger Scale

This "trust the label" mindset isn't limited to car paint. It's everywhere in the industrial chemical business.

Take wholesale price caustic soda products, for example. Companies source caustic soda based on price per ton and a one-page data sheet—without ever asking about chloride content, mercury cell vs. membrane cell manufacturing, or lot-to-lot consistency. All of that matters, and all of it is specifiable. Most just don't ask.

I remember a situation a couple years back: a procurement team switched caustic soda suppliers to save 8% per order. The new product was within the vendor's "industry standard" but slightly off on chloride specification. That small difference caused a pH control issue in a customer's process. The cleanup and rework cost about $22,000 and delayed the launch. The 8% savings turned into a 200% loss. Nobody saw it coming, because nobody asked the right questions—and the vendor wasn't about to volunteer.

Powder Coating America Has the Same Issue

In powder coating America, buyers compare price per pound and stop there. But the real metric is cost per finished square foot. A cheap powder with poor hiding power or a mismatched curing curve will use more material to cover the same area—and possibly produce rejects on top of that. The cheapest powder usually ends up being the most expensive part of the job.

The Real Cost of Not Checking

Here's what I've learned from four years of quality audits: when a coating or chemical product fails, the product cost is almost never the real cost. The breakdown usually looks like this:

  • Material itself: 5–15% of total failure cost
  • Labor to strip, reapply, or rework: 40–60%
  • Downtime (production stopped, batch scrapped): 25–40%
  • Reputation damage and lost customer trust: impossible to quantify, never zero

In other words, the material was the cheapest part of the entire equation. And that's why buying unverified coatings or chemicals to save a few percent isn't saving—it's gambling.

Yes, they really do protect paint—when the product has genuine SiO2 content at a meaningful solids level, and the surface prep is done properly. Ask the brand for two numbers: SiO2 percentage and solids percentage. Then ask where the independent test data is. If they can't give you a clear answer, that's your answer.

For powder coatings

Ask for the technical data sheet, specifically the curing curve and recommended film thickness. Compare cost per finished square foot, not price per pound. I've seen "cheaper" powders burn through the savings in material usage alone.

For caustic soda and commodity chemicals

Put your spec in the contract. Not "industry standard"—your standard. Test every lot. It costs far less than one failure, and it changes the whole vendor relationship. When the vendor knows you check, the quality magically improves.

Next time you're about to buy a ceramic coating, a powder coating, or any chemical product, ask one more question before you worry about price:

"What exactly is in this, and how do you prove it?"

The vendors who answer clearly—even if their price is higher—usually end up costing less. I've learned to ask "what's NOT included" before "what's the price." It's saved me a ton of trouble. It'll probably save you some too.
