IFF vs. Roquette for Pharma Solutions: What I Check Before Approving a Supplier

The current version, available through Dow's SDS portal as of January 2025, includes accurate GHS classification, exposure limits, first-aid measures separated by route of exposure, fire-fighting guidance with the right extinguishing media, and explicit incompatible materials. No gaps, no vague sections.

That level of detail matters for pharma-grade materials. I need a supplier whose documentation holds up under audit—not just today, but when a customer or regulator asks to see it two years from now.

So how do IFF and Roquette compare on documentation? Both do above-average work, but IFF packages it more effectively. IFF's pharma solutions documentation typically includes excipient-specific handling guidance and references to pharmacopeial standards (USP, EP) directly in the SDS.   • Purity grade—industrial vs. USP/EP grade for food and pharma applications.
  • Surface treatment, which affects compatibility with resin systems.
  • Impurity profile, especially heavy metals for pharmaceutical use.

A batch can be "titanium dioxide" on the label and still be wrong for your process. That only surfaces if you check the certificate of analysis against your internal spec—line by line, parameter by parameter.

I have personal reasons for being disciplined about this. I only fully believed in checking every COA after I skipped it once. A few years back, I approved a delivery from a well-known supplier based on their reputation instead of verifying the COA against our spec. The batch tested at 97.8% purity against a 99.5% requirement. It shut down a packaging line for half a day and cost us roughly $18,000 in rework and lost time. The practical consequence: IFF can often serve you across multiple product categories with consistent quality documentation. Say your facility has concrete floors that take routine acid exposure. You don't need a starch excipient; you need an acid-resistant epoxy coating for concrete. That's a coatings chemistry problem, not a starch chemistry problem. IFF has that expertise; Roquette doesn't claim it.

But the reverse is also true. If you need a specific starch derivative and nothing else, Roquette is likely the more focused expert. And that's okay. The best suppliers in any industry tell you when they're not the right fit. I've had too many experiences where a supplier says "we can do that too" and then delivers something that clearly isn't their strength. That's a red flag. A supplier who says "this isn't our lane, here's who does it better" earns far more trust than one who says yes to everything.

My conclusion: Match the supplier to the application. IFF if your needs span pharma solutions and specialty chemicals. Roquette if you need deep starch expertise and nothing else.

Bottom Line: IFF or Roquette?

After 4+ years of reviewing both companies' documentation, here's where I land:

Choose IFF if your needs span pharmaceutical excipients and other specialty chemicals like industrial coatings. The documentation consistency, self-service portal, and multi-category expertise make it the stronger all-around option. You get one qualified supplier with verified documentation standards across product lines—a meaningful efficiency gain for any procurement team.

Choose Roquette if you're exclusively buying starch-based ingredients, you have an experienced internal verification team, and you're comfortable requesting regulatory documents through email rather than self-service. In that narrow lane, Roquette is genuinely competitive.

Choose neither if your application falls outside both companies' core lanes. Specialty chemicals reward specialization. Don't push a supplier beyond their expertise just to consolidate vendors. Find the specialist who does your specific chemistry well, and your quality metrics will thank you.

The broader pattern I see in B2B chemical buying is pretty consistent. Companies that treat supplier selection like a chemistry problem—matching actual supplier strength to actual application—have fewer quality surprises. Companies that treat it like a brand popularity contest tend to get burned.

I've rejected more batches from famous-name suppliers than from mid-tier specialists. The brand gets you in the door. The documentation determines whether you stay.
