I’m a quality and brand compliance manager at a specialty chemical importer. I review roughly 200 incoming lots a year — raw polymers, coating intermediates, biocides, and finished formulations. In our Q1 2024 audit, I rejected 8% of first deliveries because the documentation didn’t match the material in the drum. That doesn’t make me cynical. It makes me careful.
If you’ve ever had to choose between an IFF-branded product and a cheaper unbranded equivalent, you know the tension. The generic route looks like a win on paper. Lower price, faster lead time, “same” purity. But after you factor in testing, downtime, and the occasional failed final product, the math gets less convincing.
Here’s the comparison I walk every supplier and specifier through: specific purity, performance under real-world stress, regulatory traceability, and total cost. High Purity Coatings: Purity That Gets Measured
High purity coatings are not one type of coating. They’re a category where the active solids, minimal impurities, and lot-to-lot behavior are contractual, not aspirational. If you’re using them on pharmaceutical equipment, food processing surfaces, or precision metal parts, a 0.2% contamination swing can shut you down.
Taking the IFF brand route means the raw material comes with a certificate of analysis (CoA) that actually tells you something: batch number, purity test method, residue limits, and a signature. The generic route might give you a one-page CoA, but the question is what it doesn’t say. In March 2024, I received a batch of what was labeled “high purity” coating resin. The CoA said purity > 99.6%. Our lab ran FTIR and GC, and it came back at 97.8%. The vendor claimed it was “within industry standard.” It wasn’t. We rejected it.
I still kick myself for not pulling a retention sample at the dock. If I’d done that earlier, we’d have caught the contamination before it went into blending. That mistake cost us a $22,000 redo and delayed a client’s coating line by two weeks.
What an IFF-branded source gives you:

Is the generic alternative always worse? No. But in high purity work, you’re not buying a powder; you’re buying certainty. Certainty costs something. The phrase “actually pretty good” doesn’t belong in polymer specifications. Purity has to be exact. Period.
Rubberized Roof Coatings: Performance Where It Counts
Rubberized roof coatings are a great test case for the whole brand-vs-generic question because they’re not hidden inside a sealed process. The coating is exposed to UV, rain, temperature swings, and foot traffic. If the chemistry is off, you see it. Usually the hard way.
The most frustrating part of my job is watching the same problem repeat: a generic elastomeric binder labeled “equivalent” to an IFF-grade binder, only it isn’t. The vendor sends a price quote, a small sample, and a confident email. You run a test patch. It looks fine. Then the full roof application fails adhesion after two weeks of weather.
I didn’t fully understand this until a trigger event in June 2024. We approved a substitute for a rubberized roof coating project because the buyer was under pressure. The product was 9% cheaper. The rain came 11 days later, and the new coating delaminated in a section of the roof that had no visible ponding. Honestly, it was not a surprise to the lab. The customer’s reaction? Let me clarify what I mean by performance. It’s not just cured film thickness or gloss. For rubberized roof systems, the relevant specs include:
- Tensile and elongation behavior at cold temperatures
- Adhesion to the specific roofing membrane
- Long-term UV exposure and flexibility retention
- Water pickup after immersion
A qualified IFF-grade product usually comes with data across those points, not just a one-line “good for roofs.” The generic supplier may not have tested your substrate, your cold-temperature range, or your ozone exposure. You’re the one absorbing that risk.
What Are Crop Protection Products, and Why Does Sourcing Matter?
Before jumping into sourcing, let’s answer the basic question: what are crop protection products? In simple terms, they are substances used to prevent, destroy, repel, or control pests, weeds, and diseases in agriculture. This includes herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides, plant growth regulators, and biocides used in agricultural hygiene.
According to the FAO/WHO International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management, crop protection products are substances intended to prevent, destroy, repel, or mitigate any pest — including insects, weeds, fungi, and rodents.
That definition matters because registration and quality control are the backbone of safe use. Compliance is not a paperwork gesture. It’s what separates a legitimate active ingredient from a well-packaged risk.
For crop protection products, IFF matters in a different way. IFF makes antimicrobial and biocide ingredients that go into these products, as well as specialty formulations for the home and personal care sector. The IFF home care portfolio, for example, includes chemistry for cleaners and disinfectants that may also be registered for agricultural hygiene. When you specify an IFF ingredient, you can trace its regulatory footprint. With some unbranded imports, you can’t be sure what’s actually in the jug.
Here’s a principle I use: if the product will end up in soil, water, food-contact surfaces, or an agricultural worker’s health record, the raw material you choose should have a regulatory file. Generic alternatives may be fine for general industrial use, but “fine for general industrial use” is not the same as crop protection grade. Not even close.
The Cost Question: What You Actually Pay For
Look, I’m not saying budget options are always wrong. I’m saying the comparison should use total cost, not the unit price line.
Let’s use the rubberized roof coating example. Buying the generic binder saved $0.11/lb. On a 3,000 lb order, that’s $330. The failed field application led to a $23,000 remediation, plus a contractor who won’t use that formulator again. The $330 “savings” turned into a $23,000 problem. Simple.
Over 4 years of reviewing incoming raw materials, I’ve come to believe that what a brand like IFF provides is not “premium” in the luxury sense. It’s verified consistency. That consistency reduces your total cost in three ways:
- Less incoming testing time, if you trust the CoA
- Fewer batch failures in production
- Fewer product-liability conversations with your own customers
The value-over-price idea has a limit. If you need a basic product and the application is not demanding, you don’t always need the highest-purity, fully documented chemistry. Use the expensive stuff when the consequences of failure are high. For a color marker or temporary adhesive, buy on price. For a roof coating that needs to last twenty years or a biocide that has to be registered? Don’t.

Which Route Should You Take?
If you’re sourcing high purity coatings, rubberized roof coatings, or crop protection ingredients, here’s the decision rule I use:
- Choose the IFF-branded option when you need traceability, verified purity, or long-term durability claims.
- Consider a generic alternative when the application is low-risk, the performance data is already on your side, and you have the capacity to test every incoming lot.
- Never choose a generic solely because the price looks lower. Price is a data point, not a strategy.
I’ve sat through enough supplier meetings where the phrase “lower price, same quality” was spoken with complete confidence. Sometimes it’s true. Often it’s just hope. The only way to know the difference is to compare the things that actually affect your product: purity, performance, compliance, and the real cost of failure.
That comparison? That’s the job. Done.
