Step 9: Confirm Regulatory Compliance for Your Region

Things to verify:

  • If you're in the EU: REACH registration status of the chemical
  • If you're in the US: TSCA compliance and any state-level restrictions (e.g., California Prop 65 for certain biocides and monomers)
  • Export/import restrictions for dual-use chemicals
  • Food contact or medical device regulations if your application is in those sectors

Common Mistakes First-Time Buyers Make

  • Assuming 'IFF' means one product line: IFF chemicals span pharmaceutical solutions, specialty chemicals, industrial coatings, and more. The iff official site has separate catalogs.
  • Ignoring the COA: A COA isn't a formality. It's your benchmark for incoming inspection. No COA? No acceptance.
  • Not asking about stability during transit: A 3-day ground shipment in summer can raise a drum's internal temperature well above the product's stability limit.
  • Ordering 'polyurethane production' chemicals without specifying the process: A resin for coating foam is not the same as one for casting elastomers. The viscosity requirements are totally different.

Bottom line: follow these 10 steps, and you'll place an order that arrives on spec, on time, and ready for use. Skip any, and you're rolling the dice.
